Wow. I was at subway and this lady was behind me in line and she was
being a little ugly to the indian guy behind the counter and when I
looked at her I saw a HUGE ass for how short she was. Then when she
got to the vegetable area she says 'lettuce. Oh, I don't want that much
lettuce.' Now, this subway is very stingy with their toppings so I
know there wasn't a lot of lettuce there to begin with. Maybe she
should eat a little more lettuce and avoid the meat and bread for
awhile. Plus it wouldn't hurt to not get bent when they're out of some
bread during lunch.

Called the hr lady today at ITN just to keep in touch and find out what
the next step was. She said they would check my references next and
would be in touch with me either way.

So on friday I got the application from the hr lady and filled it out
and sent along my references as well. The guy from PA didn't call and I
called the hr lady around 3pm, she asked if he had, I said no, and she
seemed to mumble something about moving forward with the application and
he can just interview me later.

So now its tuesday and I'm just waiting to hear more.

I got a vmail at 930am from the hiring mgr at ITN saying he had some
questions for me. I called him back at 10am and he was clarifying my
class time requirement. This was odd because I'd gone over it with
everyone on wednesday. He asked what time I would need to leave, 2pm
probably to get to manassas at 430pm. Then he asked how many days a
week, I told him only 1, he had thought it would be 2 or 3. He was
relieved to hear it was only 1. This surprised me and I started
wondering if there was something abnormal about my programs schedule. I
called my friend, martin, and asked him how courses were scheduled in
his program. He said they were most scheduled like the undergrad
courses, 2 or 3 days a week. 'So that's why some of my past
interviewers have balked!', I thought. I just assumed that my programs
course schedule was normal for being in grad school, apparently it
isn't.

We re-affirmed I was interested in a fulltime position and he said that
he'd have someone from the data center in PA call and do a phone
interview. One of the open positions is a dual report between bethesda
and PA. He asked me to downplay my programming ability when I talk to
them so they don't feel intimidated. Heh, ego boost!

He asked if the hr lady had contacted me yet to fill out a job
application and get references from me. I said no and he said he'd have
her do that.

He ended by asking if I had any questions, I didn't, and said he hoped I
was still interested, I was, and he said they were very interested in me
for the position. Rock on.

So now I'm waiting for the reference request from the hr lady and the
call from PA.

Interview update

So yesterday I had the interview with ITN. I met with the hiring
manager and 2 biostatisticians and then with the hr lady I had talked to
the day before to arrange the interview. The time spent talking to the
3 guys seemed to go quickly and I think they all went well. They talked
about some of the work they would like the position to do and about some
of the problems they were having. Yesterday afternoon I got a request
for script/program examples so I sent 7 files that I had written in
various classes and supplied a brief description of each. They were in
perl, python, matlab, and R, so I was satisfied that that showed enough
breadth. I was pleasantly surprised to look at these old files and see
how complicated they were, I never realize how complicated the
coursework is until I see it again.

So now I'm waiting to hear back from the hr lady. She had said
yesterday that I would hear from them by friday because they wanted to
fill the 2 open fulltime positions quickly. There are also 2 intern
positions open. She said they had 2 more people to interview.

I'm hoping the ease of the conversations and my script examples win the
day.

As it turns out they aren't very big but are trying to accomplish a
lot. They were 11 ppl, or so, 7years ago and are now 70. They call
that fast growth, heh. ;) I wouldn't say its fast if the workload and
expertise of the workforce has increased.

Apparently ITN is part of the university of california at san francisco,
it was mentioned that they are all UC employees. They are a
non-profit.

Oh, the hr lady didn't balk when I told her my salary requirement, so
that's good, or just good hr pokerface. ;)

All 4 people asked about my school situation and what arrangements I'd
need for that. I explained to each one that I wanted to progress thru
the phd program part time and would only have 1 afternoon a week that I
would need to leave early. Everyone seemed fine with that and the hr
lady commented that they are flexible with schedules and keeping a
work/life balance.

The hr lady did say as we were talking that people only tend to stick
around ITN for 2yrs, which seemed odd to me. She said that they hire
good people and thru working and interacting with the clinicians and
groups around the country are seen to be competent and produce good work
and get snapped up. I was surprised to hear that since the work
environment seems good at this office but it would make sense if people
are offered more money.

My plan would be to accomplish as much as possible there in the time it
took to finish my PhD. Then I could decide what to do after that, so
I'm looking for someplace I can stay for 1.5-2.5yrs.

well today was a whirlwind day. it's the 33rd anniversary of my accidental translation into flesh and resulting birth into this so-called 'world' AND a job interview was arranged today. I got a call around 1130am from a woman at Immune Tolerance Network about an internship, as we talked she clarified that I was actually looking for fulltime work, i said yes. she said she would forward the position description to me and asked me to get back to her today if i was interested in it. well, the PD didn't arrive in the next 20mins so i left to run an errand downtown and while i was out she called me and asked if i'd looked at it, i told her i hadn't, she remarked she had just sent it, i told her i was out and would look at it today. so i walked down to coffee after finishing my errand and had a pastry and 3shot macchiato and read the PD while i sat there. i responded that i was interested and the position sounded challenging and fun, she asked when i was available for an interview, i said as early as tomorrow morning and onward, she replied with an interview schedule, i accepted it, and it's all set up now.

so tomorrow from 10am to noon i have an interview with 4 people at the ITN in bethesda md.

i'm hoping that this is lucky 33.

Birthday afternoon @ java shack

I had to walk down to whole foods to deposit a birthday check from mom
(thanks mom!) and decided to walk a further block down the street to
coffee at java shack. I don't get down here much because its closer to
courthouse metro than clarendon metro. The way I walk from home murky
coffee is closer so I always end up there instead. I enjoy java shack a
lot though, its always very chill and the people are interesting. Plus,
the coffee is great. :)

Yet another job update.

I've been applying like mad for the last month and as always, nothing.

I've now been applying for jobs for a year. I don't understand why I'm
not getting more interviews, let alone hired.

Spring'06 grades

Grades were in yesterday. I got 3 A's and 1 B. 7 credits of A, and 3
credits of B.

I scored an A in bioinformatics seminar (1 credit), biometrics (3
credits), and microarray analysis (3 credits). The B was in biophysics
(3 credits).

My GPA was 3.41 and is now 3.46. :( I'm hoping that if I can score an
A, or even a B, when I retake numerical methods that it will rise above
3.5.

<3 Dr. Who

i just watched s2e2 of the dr. who confidential show that is on after the actual eps

i grew up watching dr. who and reading the dr. who novels and watching all kinds of other sci fi shows and reading comic books for 13yrs of my life. *sigh* i think the best thing i took away from all of that was that knowledge will save you, every time.

that really was the point. either the doctors innate knowledge, which was vast, would save the day or knowledge gained from the local area/environment or people or by observing the situations around him and his companions. every single time, learn what there is to learn and win.

this is also the case in all sci-fi shows pretty much, especially ones that feature doctors, which were my favorite ones. beverly crusher on the next generation and Dr. Suzanne McCullough from War of the Worlds were both inspirations to go into Microbiology.

that is also why i'm attracted to Bioinformatics. I love the possibility that we could reach a point where people could be helped from minute but vital information that needs to be interpreted just-so.

President Bush == War Criminal

I just finished reading Jimmy Carters 'Our Endangered Values'. I really
wish we could have someone in the office of President next who had guts
and would send Bush to the ICC (International Criminal Court) to be
prosecuted for war crimes and environmental crimes.

I also wish that he (or she) would index the minimum wage to inflation
on a 7yr scale to bring it current, establish 20K as the poverty level,
eliminate income tax for below the poverty level, establish a flat tax
up to 200K, and an increasing tax rate over 200K.

Reaffirm Kyoto and enforce the Clean Air Act, specifically regarding old
power generation sites. Fund pebble bed nuclear power plants for the
50yr short term and fund wind, solar, and nano technologies in the
interest of future energy sources.

Use the vast collective bargaining power of the government to reduce
drug costs from runaway Big Pharma while examining their patent rights
and enforcing them overseas as necessary.

Increase the Cafe standard to 30mpg effective immediately and remove the
SUV exemption. Then have the standard increase to 40mpg for all
vehicles after 5yrs. No cheating would be allowed, if its a hybrid then
the engine, when in use and examined in isolation, would have to meet
the Cafe standard, any additional mileage by the battery would simply be
bonus.

Enforce and strengthen the inheritance tax.

Remove loopholes regarding 'hiding' earnings, either by individuals or
companies, in off-shore accounts.

Encourage an individual savings rate of 10% post-tax. This is beyond
and after the 10-15% people should be saving for retirement in
retirement accounts. This is encouraging, repeatedly, people to be
responsible citizens.

The sad part is that as revolutionary as these steps may sound, they are
only the most obvious steps necessary to really begin to advance. We
have suffered severe regression under the inept presidency of War
Criminal Bush.
